Relieve Your Cat’s Arthritis Pain with Solensia

Introduction

After over 6 years of working in clinical practice, I can say that feline arthritis was never thoroughly addressed in my practice until recently because cats are just so sensitive to many pain medications and the longest time that any of those meds can be used for is approximately 5 days. I was always faced with the battle of soothing chronic pain while sparing my patient’s liver and kidneys.

Signs of Pain in Cats

It can sometimes be difficult to tell if your geriatric kitty is in discomfort. Obvious signs of arthritis in cats may include:

  • Generalised stiffness especially in the hind quarters
  • Refusing to jump up or down from surfaces they’d usually bunny hop from
  • Limping
  • Difficulty using their potty box
  • Less activity/more lazy “couch potato” behaviour
  • Decreased grooming/a more “bed-head” coat appearance
  • Going MIA in their favourite hide spots

Some cats may be better at hiding their pain and may not show signs of discomfort during their veterinary exam. No wonder many cats with mild to moderate arthritis may go undetected by their owners until they reach the obvious saw-horse stiffness stage. This is where Solensia comes in.

I must admit, Solensia has been a huge game changer since gracing the veterinary markets after its approval for commercial launch in January 2022 by the FDA to manage osteoarthritis in cats. I have seen my patients move from hobbling, grumpy fur balls to puss in boots ninjas in just over a week and owners are noticing it too. I’m not talking about the vet telling you that a product works. I’m talking about a product that markets itself through its own efficacy. I have heard it being called the “Wonder Drug” and it truly is. For this reason, I have many clients who religiously schedule their monthly injections to maintain their cat’s happy, pain-free life.

What is Solensia?

Solensia is a feline monoclonal antibody which binds to NGF (Nerve-Growth Factor) and prevents it from binding to its receptors on nerve cells where it regulates pain signalling. By doing this Solensia prevents the transmission of pain signals associated with osteoarthritis.  This means that cats suffering from painful, achy joints can benefit from pain relief. Many cats after receiving Solensia improve within a week of the injection being administered. The effects of the medication tend to last up to one month and then your kitty is due another dose. Solensia is recommended to be administered for the rest of your kitties’ life in order for them to have continuous benefit from the medication.

Benefits of Solensia

1. Effective Pain Relief

  • Targeted Therapy: Solensia specifically targets and neutralizes nerve growth factor (NGF), a key player in the pain pathway associated with osteoarthritis.
  • Reduces Inflammation: By inhibiting NGF, it helps reduce inflammation and pain in the joints, improving the cat’s overall comfort.

2. Improved Mobility

  • Enhanced Movement: Many cats with osteoarthritis experience difficulty moving. Solensia can help improve their mobility, allowing them to move more freely and comfortably.
  • Increased Activity Levels: With reduced pain, cats are often more willing to engage in physical activities, which can contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and overall fitness.

3. Enhanced Quality of Life

  • Better Daily Functioning: Reduced pain and improved mobility can significantly enhance a cat’s daily life, making routine activities like grooming, eating, and using the litter box easier.
  • Happier Disposition: Less pain can lead to a happier and more playful cat, which is beneficial for their mental well-being and strengthens the bond with their owner.

4. Convenient Administration

  • Monthly Injections: Solensia is administered as a monthly injection by a veterinarian, eliminating the need for daily medication. This is particularly beneficial for cats that are difficult to medicate orally.
  • Long-Lasting Effects: The once-a-month injection ensures consistent pain management over a prolonged period, providing sustained relief.

5. Minimal Side Effects

  • Safety Profile: As a monoclonal antibody, Solensia is designed to be highly specific in its action, potentially reducing the risk of side effects compared to traditional pain medications like NSAIDs.
  • Well-Tolerated: Most cats tolerate Solensia well, with fewer gastrointestinal or renal side effects that are commonly associated with other pain relief medications.

6. Non-Steroidal Treatment Option

  • Alternative to NSAIDs: For cats that cannot tolerate NSAIDs due to kidney disease or other health issues, Solensia offers an alternative pain management solution.
  • Compatibility with Other Treatments: It can be used alongside other treatments without the same risks of drug interactions that can occur with NSAIDs or other pain relief medications.

7. Owner Peace of Mind

  • Effective Pain Management: Knowing their pet is receiving effective and ongoing pain relief can provide peace of mind to cat owners.
  • Improved Compliance: The monthly veterinary visit for the injection ensures adherence to the treatment plan, reducing the risk of missed doses.

Client Review

Improving Meesh’s Quality of Life with Solensia “Our senior kitty has been using solensia for a few months now, and the results of this medication have assisted her tremendously! Before, she would limp and could not climb very well, where now she has a pep in her step and even tries jumping on chairs again (which she NEVER used to do before)! She even chases frogs on our little porch now. This medication has brought back our cat’s liveliness, almost making her seem young again! We thank the Mobile Vet Company SO much for educating us on this medication to help our cat live her best life ❤️😻
